Attention Deficit Disorder(ADD/ADHD) and Chiropractic

Friday, January 27th, 2012

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and is most commonly diagnosed in children who are in their early years at school.

The most obvious signs of ADHD are:

  • Inability to pay attention
  • Hyperactive behavior
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Difficulty in concentrating

Between 3 and 5% of children in the United States (around 2 million kids) are thought to have ADHD, and more boys suffer than girls. That equates to at least one child in every class of 25 to 30 children, although many more are labeled as having ADHD who may simply be badly behaved. For this reason, proper diagnosis is recommended so that children are not needlessly treated and perhaps medicated for a condition they do not have.

Research is ongoing into the causes of ADHD, and current thinking suggests it is down to an overactive nervous system, combined with the brain’s failure to properly filter out unnecessary sights, sounds, thoughts and emotions. Chiropractors are not in the business of directly treating ADHD, but they are able to help rectify certain elements that may be stressing the nervous system, such as:

  • Removing spinal subluxations that interfere with the nervous system
  • Offering dietary advice to eliminate common trigger foods
  • Testing for allergens that may stress the nervous system
  • Suggesting ways to eliminate or reduce problem chemicals in the home

Conventional medicine tends to treat ADHD with a chemical called methylphenidate, commonly known as Ritalin. Although this is a stimulant that acts to speed up the nervous system, its net effect is to calm the sufferer, possibly because it activates the filtering out process in the brain. The problem is that Ritalin does nothing to cure ADHD; it only hides the symptoms. And when Ritalin is taken for an extended period, it can actually damage the brain’s proper functioning.

It is therefore important to look at less drastic options if your child has ADHD, and one of these is chiropractic treatment to de-stress the nervous system.

Bedwetting and Chiropractic

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Bedwetting is a stressful situation for all involved. For the bedwetter, though, it can cause feelings of shame and embarrassment, and may even retard the development of normal social functioning. Why bedwetting occurs is not fully understood, although in some cases children may have underdeveloped bladders or experience a problem recognizing when their bladder is full. Children under four years of age are more prone to this happening.

When a child suddenly starts bedwetting after weeks or months of staying dry through the night, it could be a sign that something is wrong. One of the reasons for this is the onset of stress. Perhaps some emotional upheaval, such as moving home, arguments or divorce, or the arrival of a new baby. It may also indicate physical or sexual abuse or some medical condition, therefore it should not be ignored and needs to be checked out by a doctor.

Your doctor of chiropractic may well be able to help with bedwetting problems by easing any physical irritation that may be interfering with the nerves that control bladder function. The nerves responsible for this exit the spine low down at the sacrum. In adults, this is a large, fused bone that is not easily injured, but in childhood it is still in five separate pieces, which may become misaligned following an injury such as a fall. If this happens, the nerves controlling the bladder may be disturbed.

Chiropractic can help rectify any such mechanical issues, and research shows that it can be effective in helping children regain bladder control and avoid bedwetting.

Chiropractic More Effective In Treating Neck Pain than Drugs

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Recent studies are showing that a more “hands-on” approach may be more effective in treating neck pain than traditional therapy or a physician’s care.

The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, compared three modes of treatment to determine which was the most effective in improving mobility and reducing neck pain.

183 patients between the ages of 18 to 70, who had reported complaints of neck pain for a minimum two-week period, participated in the study.

Group one received continued routine care by a doctor and were ordered to take pain medication and rest; group two received Chiropractic adjustments, and group three underwent physical therapy, including a supervised exercise regimen.

After seven weeks of treatment, 68.3% of patients who received adjustments reported that they were either “completely recovered,” or had significantly improved as a result of treatment — compared with only 50.8% of the physical therapy group and 35.9% of patients under a physician’s care.

Results show that Chiropractic adjustments are more effective than drug therapy in treating neck pain. In addition, range of motion also improved more among patients in the adjustment and physical therapy groups.

Transformation of the Month- May

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

I had headaches, backaches, bad posture, and bad balance.  I struggled pretty badly.  In school, I would get migraines, forcing me to have to go home because I felt so bad.  This made my grades suffer.  I also struggled in sports.  I couldn’t run fast when I played baseball, basketball, and football.

Well, I always had bad balance and it would affect my running.  I began having headaches, migraines, and backaches in 5th grade football.  I have lived with these problems for 7 years.  I was born with minor problems but when I played football in 5th grade, it threw me further out of whack.  When it was at its worst, I felt terrible and never wanted to get out of bed.  I didn’t want to work out, nothing.

I tried using medications to fix my problems and other chiropractors.  The results failed.  I took over 5 migraine pills in one day if I had to and Motrin for my back.

I didn’t want to do anything but play videogames lying down in my room alone.  I didn’t want to work out, so I gained weight.  When I did want to do something about my weight, I went to Fitness Together and they referred me to Dr. Ben.  Since I have been coming to Complete Care Chiropractic, I have better posture, better balance, and no more headaches or backaches.  It’s improved my life greatly.

Dr. Ben is great.  He is the best chiropractor ever.  Kara is the best too.  They both are really nice and help me with my problems.  If you are iffy on the whole chiropractor adjusting your back, don’t be.  You will have results and you will be part of the chiropractic family.

Don’t allow your spine to rot due to a lack of maintenance!

Maintain your spine with regular chiropractic adjustments, much like you maintain your car with oil changes, tune-ups and keeping the tires in alignment.  Your spine is supposed to be straight up and down from the back and have 3 curves from the side in order for optimum health and function.  Not all chiropractors are alike.  Although they go by the same name not all chiropractors deliver the appropriate care to return the spine towards a more normal position to offer long-term benefits.

Have your spine evaluated even if you FEEL good.  Problems develop through years of neglect without signs and symptoms.

Call 918-272-8054 or email us for a FREE evaluation for you and your family.

Allergy Season??? Think again….

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Unlike medical care that simply aims to mask the symptoms(runny nose, watery eyes) of allergies, Chiropractic care works by detecting and correcting the underlying causes.  As Jay stated, the immune system has the capacity to fight off all foreign invaders(bacteria, virus etc.) that could potentially make us sick.

The thing is, we are all living under the same umbrella, yet not all of us have allergies or get sick.  We need to ask ourselves, “Why do I have allergies or get sick even though my family lives in the same home, breathes the same air and eats the same food as I do?”  Simply, if pollen in the air were responsible for allergies, we would all have the same allergies.  Pollen is no more the cause of allergies than gray hair is the cause of old age.

Allergies are a symptom of an underlying weakened immune system.  Chiropractic care works by removing interference to the nervous system thereby improving function of the immune system and the entire body.  The nervous system controls all systems of the body.

When is the last time you had your spine and nervous system checked?
